Echelon Shear Bands | |||||||
Shear bands if not hard-linked along rectilinear traces are made up of echelon segments both on a nearly vertical section (Figure 1a) and on a nearly horizontal section (Figure 1b) in Aztec Sandstone, Valley of Fire State Park. Here, the segments are numbered. Number 4 corresponds to the same segment in both views. Figure 2 shows a series of mostly hard-linked segments of shear bands in Navajo Sandstone with the original segments still identifiable. The hard link geometry has been referred to as 'eye structure' by Antonellini and Aydin (1995), 'duplex structure' by Cruikshank et al. (1991), and 'lozenge structure' by Awdal et al, (2014).
