Initiation of Faults based on Shear Banding
How and where a shear band starts is not well-known, partly due to the fact that once a band forms, the original micro-structure from which it started is likely destroyed. However, it is safe to assume that shear bands initiate from flaws in rocks such as concentrations of large pores which lead to pore collapse and pre-existing micro-cracks which instigate grain breakage.
