Intergrain Motion

Intergrain motion includes translation and rotation of the grains without significant grain fracturing. It is a mechanism associated with deformation of sand and unconsolidated or poorly cemented sediments commonly referred to as particulate flow. It is one of the mechanisms for strain localization into deformation bands with various kinematics as will be reconsidered under 'Volumetric Bands' and 'Shear Bands.'
